Messages circulating on the messaging app WhatsApp claim that MTN MoMo is offering 25GB of data and 20,000 SSP, and MTN is providing 30GB of free data to all users to celebrate Independence Day. However, both claims instruct users to click on suspicious links to claim the offer, but these claims are false.
“Hurry now and check if you are eligible for this offer,” reads one of the messages. “All MTN customers should click the link below to get the bonus now,” the other urges.
Debunking the Claim:
Here’s why The ClarityDesk has debunked these claims:
After clicking that blue button as instructed, a user will be taken to the page below where they are asked for their phone number to confirm the transaction.
After entering a phone number whether valid or invalid, a user never gets a transaction, instead they are asked to share the message with more friends on WhatsApp or group chats.
However, the links provided in the messages (https://momo-reward.alloffer.org/gift and https://tinyurl.com/MTN-30GB-Offer) are not official MTN websites or domains. MTN’s legitimate website for South Sudan is https://www.mtn.com.ss/. Scammers often use shortened URLs or domains that mimic official branding to trick unsuspecting users into clicking.
MTN, like any reputable telecommunications company, announces all its official promotions and giveaways through its verified channels: its official website, official social media pages (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram), reputable news outlets, and direct SMS messages from official MTN numbers. There has been no such announcement on any of MTN South Sudan’s official platforms regarding these specific Independence Day offers.
The amounts of data (25GB, 30GB) and money (20,000 SSP) offered are exceptionally high for a general giveaway to all users without any clear terms, conditions, or specific eligibility criteria. Such “too good to be true” offers are a classic hallmark of phishing scams designed to entice clicks.
What phishing tactics?
Phishing tactics are messages that employ common phishing tactics, including: creating a sense of urgency like “Hurry now”, promising exorbitant rewards, directing users to click an external, unofficial link to “check eligibility” or “get the bonus”, and exploiting a national holiday (Independence Day) to make the offer seem timely and credible.
Our Verdict:
The ClarityDesk finds that the claims circulating about MTN MoMo giving out 25GB data and SSP 20,000, and MTN offering 30GB free data for Independence Day, are false. These messages are phishing scams and therefore not legitimate offers from MTN South Sudan.
What to Do:
- Do NOT click on these links. Clicking them could lead to websites designed to steal your personal information (like MoMo PINs, bank details, or other login credentials) or install malware on your device.
- Verify offers directly with MTN. If you receive an offer that seems suspicious, always visit MTN South Sudan’s official website or contact their official customer service toll-free line 100 or WhatsApp+211920002200 to verify its authenticity.
- Report the scam. You can report these scam messages to MTN customer service, WhatsApp and block the sender.
- Administrators should ‘delete for everyone’ such messages shared in their WhatsApp group chats.
- Share this information. Inform your friends and family, especially those who may not be aware of these scam tactics, to prevent them from falling victim.
